AutoSavings

AutoSavings is a service that automatically selects suitable AWS Reserved Instances and Savings Plans for users, helping to reduce cloud costs. With the ability to achieve up to 65% cost savings without the need for direct commitment purchases, it allows for a reduction in time spent on cloud management. You can start using the service at no cost because it automatically deducts a portion of your savings.

AutoSavings is an exclusive service for AWS. According to the AWS Reserved Instances (RI) policy, you can only purchase RIs one month after the account is created. Therefore, to purchase RIs, you need to have an account that has been created for at least one month before you can immediately use the service.

Getting started

To use AutoSavings, you must first subscribe to the service. Service subscription can only be done by the owner of the organization. If you are an admin or member user and not the owner, please request service subscription from the owner.

When entering the AutoSavings menu, a subscription popup will appear on the screen. Clicking the 'Subscribe to AutoSavings' button in the popup will take you to a screen where you can choose the accounts to subscribe to AutoSavings. After selecting the account to link with AutoSavings, click the 'Subscribe' button in the bottom right corner.

To link more accounts to AutoSavings, click the 'Add More Accounts' button in the upper right corner of the Savings tab to navigate to the account selection screen.

Note

If you haven't registered AWS accounts with OpsNow, please refer to the article [Registering cloud accounts].

Increasing Reserved Instances purchase quota

AWS limits monthly Reserved Instances (RIs) purchases to 20 per region per month, constraining OpsNow's AutoSavings algorithm's full utilization. To optimize the use of this feature, you need to request an increase a RI quota for each region with AutoSavings eligible EC2 instances.

  1. Access the AWS console for your linked account using your admin credentials.

  2. In the search bar of the AWS console, type "Quota increase request" and hit enter.

  3. On the following page, search for EC2, and choose "Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud."

  4. Click the "Request quota increase" button in the pop-up window.

  5. In the next pop-up, enter a number (Recommendation: 1,000) for Change quota value and click "Request."

  6. Check the status of your quota increase request under the Recent quota increase requests section. AWS typically takes 1-3 business days to process these requests.

Viewing AutoSavings summary

In the Savings tab, you can review the cost-saving status achieved through AutoSavings. Select a period using the filter in the upper right corner and choose an account from the upper left corner to display information for the selected period and account on the screen. Please refer to the table below for explanations of each metric.

Metric

The cost of the commitment hours that you used, based on the public On-Demand prices.

Commitments

Commitments allow you to purchase resources at reduced hourly rates by committing to using specific instances for a predefined period.

Total AutoSavings

The amount saved through AutoSavings compared to the cost of On-Demand instances over the selected period.

Savings Rate

The percentage of cost savings achieved by comparing total net savings to the cost of using On-Demand resources.

At the bottom of the cards displaying Savings metrics, a graph is presented showing savings during the selected period from the period filter. In this graph, you can review the on-demand cost equivalent amount, savings amount, and commitment amount.

Checking how much is covered by AutoSavings

In the Coverage tab, you can check how much of your cloud usage is covered by AutoSavings. A higher coverage indicates effective utilization of RIs and SPs. Select a period using the filter in the upper right corner and choose an account from the upper left corner to display information for the selected period and account on the screen. Please refer to the table below for explanations of each metric.

Checking AutoSavings inventory

The Inventory tab allows you to check the quantity and statuses of RIs and SPs purchased through AutoSavings. If you select a period in the upper right corner of the screen, data corresponding to that period will be displayed on the screen. The number of commitments by status is displayed on each card, and detailed information such as RI ID or SP ID, account information, commitment type, status, region, platform, instance type, payment option, hourly commitment cost, etc., is displayed in the table at the bottom.

Note

After subscribing to AutoSavings, it may take up to 3 days for all data to become visible. If data is still not visible after 3 days, it indicates that there is no eligible RI or SP for the purchase. If there is an eligible RI or SP for purchase, it will be displayed in the inventory once purchased.
