Checking impacts of Right Sizing

Right Sizing is the process of matching instance types and sizes to your workload performance and capacity requirements at the lowest possible cost. It’s also the process of looking at deployed instances and identifying opportunities to eliminate or downsize without compromising capacity or other requirements.

Right Sizing involves continually analyzing instance performance and usage needs and patterns, and adjusting instances that are either overprovisioned or poorly matched to the workload requirements. Because your resource needs are always changing, right sizing must become an ongoing process to continually improve cost optimization.

On the Right Sizing tab, you can explore right sizing opportunities and understand the impact of right sizing. OpsNow provides the following four rightsizing recommendations: Downsize, Modernize, Idle, and Upsize.

  • Downsize: Decrease instance size for improved cost-efficiency as determined by your utilization parameters.

  • Modernize: Switch to updated instance types of the same type for better performance and/or lower cost.

  • Idle: Terminate resources if they remain below the defined utilization rate set during configuration.

  • Upsize: Upgrade to higher-performance resources if they exceed the utilization as determined by your utilization parameters.

On the Right Sizing Recommendations card, you can check the cost changes that occur when applying right sizing. On the Eligible Resources card, you can verify the number of resources targeted for right sizing.

In the bottom table, you can review details about the Right Sizing recommended resources. The table includes information such as account ID, resource name, resource ID, instance type, estimated cost, utilization, and the anticipated cost change over the next 30 days (Monthly Savings column).

Checking estimated savings from unused resources

On the Unused Resources tab, you can identify and assess the potential cost savings that can be achieved by deleting unused resources that comprise your cloud spend.

This feature provides views based on account and region, using the dropdown button in the top-left corner of the screen. Additionally, on the top-right corner of the screen, you can choose the cloud provider.

In the bottom table, you will find information such as account details, resource name, resource ID, region, reasons for classification as unused resources, resource status, type, size, IOPS, and the anticipated cost savings over the next 30 days (Monthly Savings column).

Setting resource exclusion tags

If you do not want recommendations for a specific resource, use tags to remove specific resources from the recommendation list. This applies to all cloud providers, including AWS, Azure, and GCP.

To set up a resource exclusion tag, navigate to the Settings > Exclusion from Recommendation tab in the Resources menu. Choose the tag key and tag value at the bottom of the screen. Click the "+Add" button in the top right corner to add a set of tag key and tag value.

Setting resource Right Sizing criteria

In the Settings > Right Sizing tab, you can set criteria for the following Right Sizing recommendations:

  • Idle: After analyzing the usage of CPU, Network, Memory, etc., if the usage remains below the defined threshold set in the configuration, it is recommended to terminate the resources.

  • Upsize: If the usage exceeds the defined threshold set in the configuration, it is recommended to upgrade to resources with higher performance.

  • Downsize: If the usage falls below the defined threshold set in the configuration, it is recommended to downgrade to more cost-effective resources.

  • Modernize: For lower costs and better performance, it is recommended to migrate to the latest generation of the same resource type.

Setting unused resource criteria

In the Settings > Unused Resources tab, you can set your own criteria for unused resources. Clicking on "Manual Settings" allows you to choose the criteria you want from the provided options. With "Default Settings," all criteria provided by OpsNow are applied.
